THE FEDERAL Government has assured adequate security for the 35,000 registered cotton farmers in Zamfara State who were engaged under the Central Bank of Nigeria in collaboration with National Cotton Association of Nigeria, NACOTTAN, Anchor Borrowers programme for 2020 wet season farming.
This was announced by the State Director Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Prince Dr. Musa Raji during a flag off ceremony of input distribution to cotton farmers of the Zamfara State chapter of the NACOTTAN yesterday in Gusau, the state capital.
Dr. Raji has explained that the Federal Government has directed all the Security Chiefs to ensure deployment of personnel to Zamfara State whose primary assignments were to embark on incessant patrol across farm lands so as to encourage the farmers to meet the targeted tonnes of cotton.
“The Minister of Agriculture has informed that, President Buhari has during the FEC meeting, put weight on the need to revive cotton production in the country as witnessed on the successful rice production, with this, it was learnt that, the nation’s economy will improve to the extent that reliance on oil would drastically reduced”, Raji has said.
Earlier, the Zamfara State Commissioner for Agriculture, Aminu Sulaiman ‘Yarkofoji, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, informed that Governor Bello Matawalle’s administration has already procured 100,000 hectares of lands for cotton farming in the state.
“Zamfara government has earmarked the sum of eight billion naira with a view to revive farming activities in the state with over 100,000 registered farmers in various fields comprised of cotton, rice and other grains.
Also speaking, National Secretary General of the NACOTTAN, Alhaji Sani Muhammad Dahiru, cried that “Only five ginneries are now functioning out of 19 that were operating those days in Zamfara State, therefore, our aim was to revive them into full operational”.
