Osun Police turning into monsters

SOME OF THE police officers attached to the Dada Estate Police Divisional Office in Osogbo, Osun State are fast becoming menaces to the society.

On midday Tuesday, two police officers in mufti accosted a motorcyclist (Okada) with a middle-aged man in the capital area on the allegation that the biker was riding against the traffic.

The gentleman on the bike donning a white shirt and a pink tie demanded to know who the men were. According to an eyewitness, the man thought they were miscreants and he challenged them. This led to a struggle as the men in mufti attempted to remove the key of the motorcycle.

“The next thing was a slap to the man’s face. He held on to the man in adire kaftan. He was overpowered and was handcuffed to the Dada Estate Police Station.

“At the station, he was coerced to write an indicting statement. Some men who came to bail him were billed N50,000. The intervention of a man who wished to be anonymous reduced the unreceipted billing to N10,000 which the IPO received at the back of the DPO’s office.

“A lady officer was so rude to them shouting at the men who greeted all present as they entered that they lacked manners as they ought to have asked for the IPO (Investigating Police Officer) instead of speaking to their friend who they found handcuffed to the chair”, added the eyewitness.

The Superintendent of Police who handled the case was said to be civil but her “superior officer”, a female who barged in was said to be uncouth as she was almost beating up one of the men that came to bail the chartered accountant.

The eyewitness pointed out that one of the elderly men merely asked that the officer being a woman ought to douse the tension and not exacerbate it.

“This infuriated her and was almost pushing them out if not that the men allowed reasoning to prevail by apologising to her.

“You can ask around, these policemen ply one way most of the time especially when they are coming out of the Niyi Ibikunle area where they do go to harass club goers. It is even pathetic that they hardly put on their uniforms and many people will mistake them for miscreants or area boys.

“It is high time the Commissioner of Police call them to order before pandemonium sets in”. The eyewitness cautioned.
