MEMBERS OF the National Assembly from Rivers State especially those from the Rivers South-East Senatorial District,  comprising of seven Local Government Areas in Rivers State have staged a protest calling the Federal Government’s attention to the sorry situation of the Eleme/Akpajo axis of the East/West road.

The federal lawmakers from the area led by Senator Bari Mpigi told newsmen that despite several appeals and protest letters to the executive arm of the Federal Government backed up by a resolution of the National Assembly yet the APC led Federal Government is still adamant and not showing care to the eminent danger the poor state of the Akpajo bridge is posting.

On his own part,  the member representing Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency Hon O.K Chinda said “despite the lot that is been taken from the oil rich area of the state yet nothing is been done to maintain the road leading to the economic hub of the nation.

“This road and bridge lead to the Port Harcourt Refinery,  Petrochemical Industry,  INDORAMA and Fertilizer company, Intels, Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone”.
Chinda stressed that the road is also the gateway to the two sister states of Akwa Ibom and Cross River state. “The road is also the only major access road to the Nigeria Naval College, Onne”.

The immediate past Rivers State Commissioner for Works and Member representing Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency, Dum Deekor said “while serving as the Commissioner for Works,  Governor Wike directed them to do a repair and reinforce the bridge unfortunately the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, appeared to say it’s a Federal Government project that the state should not interfere”.

The members representing Andoni, Opobo/ Nkoro Federal Constituency, Inombek Abiante said “very soon the seven Local Government in  Rivers South/East  will be caught off from the rest of the Nigeria State, the economic and business activities will be grounded and the nation’s economy will be in comatose”.
