Ekiti trains traditional birth attendants

The Ekiti State Government has expressed its readiness to train all relevant stakeholders, individuals and partners in the health profession in order to ensure quality healthcare delivery to all Ekiti residents.
The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. (Mrs.) Mojisola Yaya-Kolade stated this at a Sensitisation Workshop organized by her Ministry for Traditional Birth Attendants in Ekiti State.
Dr. Yaya-Kolade noted that the training was organized to encourage the Traditional Birth Attendants to make prompt referral of any noticeable complicated issues at baby delivery to government hospitals.
“The training seeks to ensure that no life is lost at delivery. The training will also help to protect the Traditional Birth Attendants, pregnant women and newborn baby “. She said.
The Commissioner stated that the Traditional Birth Attendants are partners in progress stressing that they need training to catch up with the newest health techniques for safe delivery in the world.
“The time to underestimate the place of Traditional Birth Attendants in Ekiti State is far gone. It is a new dawn” .The Medical Consultant stated.
She charged them to be more professional and give more attention to details adding that midwife profession is a great profession that requires dignity and dedication to duty.
“I’m a Midwife. In the course of my job, I have taken delivery of many children”. She noted.
Earlier in her lecture, Dr. Ibikunle of the Saving Million Lives Programme said that the Sensitisation Workshop was timely, noting that Nigeria had the second most frequent cases of death of pregnant women at birth in the world, second to India.
“The workshop is a bold step to improve maternal and child mortality, child health, nutrition and population “. She noted.
The Chairman of the Association of Traditional Birth Attendants in Ekiti State, Mrs. Alabi Adefunke, then, Mrs. Adetunji Omowumi and Mrs. Adetunla Olayemi that spoke on behalf of the participants appreciated the state government for organizing the training and pledged to cooperate with the government and apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired from the seminar to wipe out death of pregnant women and babies during delivery.
