NORTHERN POLITICIANS and some members of the civil society groups have voiced condemnation to hints by a former All Progressives Congress, APC, member, Alhaji Buba Galadima, that President Muhammadu Buhari may contest the 2023 Presidential elections.
Alhaji Buba Galadima, who is now the National Chairman of a faction of APC known as the Reformed All Progressives Congress, rAPC, had stated in an interview last weekend that President Buhari may be persuaded by some forces at the State House to contest the next presidential election.
Alhaji Buba Galadima said that “President Muhammadu Buhari may be dragged into the 2023 presidential race by some forces” even though Nigerians are presently wallowing in poverty under the present administration.
Although the elderly politician did not name those hatching the plan to draft the president for a third term bid, his disclosure drew angry reactions from political and civil society groups who vowed to resist the move.
In a telephone interview, one-time National Secretary of the Movement for Democracy and Justice, MDJ, Alhaji Alli Tafida said the president will be violating the constitution by accepting to contest another election.
He however advised that the comments of the National Chairman of the Reformed All Progressives Congress, rAPC, should be regarded by true democrats as a timely warning pointing out that Galadima still has friends within the APC ranks who may have leaked the plan to him.
The Reformed All Progressives Congress, rAPC, leader was quoted as saying that, nobody except God knows what will happen between now and 2023, warning however that “many politicians will be left disappointed.”
“Only God knows what will happen between now and 2023. Buhari may even be drafted to join the 2023 fray by some of his aides and associates. Buhari may be drafted by those enjoying under his government. Buhari has always been drafted to contest elections and I won’t be surprised if his supporters draft him into the 2023 race.”
He regretted that politicians jostling and talking about 2023 do not know that they are only over-exposing themselves and this may be used by their opponents against them.
Galadima further criticised the present administration, saying things are getting worse. “Nigerians have entered a one-chance bus” with Buhari at the helm of affairs, he said while expressing surprise that the president is not even bothered about the suffering and hardship imposed on Nigerians.0
