NO FEWER than 25 Handball Teams have converged on Kaduna for the 2019 National Handball Division One League.
The national league which was scheduled for 13th to 22nd November, 2019 is expected to feature sixteen male and nine female teams.
Secretary General, Handball Federation, Mohammed Maigidansama, disclosed at a press briefing in Kaduna on Tuesday.
According to him, the Federation has enjoyed the support of the Kaduna State Government as attested to by the heavy presence of members of the state Ministry of Sports as well the Local Organizing Committee (LOC)
“As I’m talking to you, Team Benue and Kwara would arrive Kaduna since they were on the way while others would arrive on Thursday in preparation for the championship.”
We have the Director of Sports, Kaduna state and his deputy; chairman LOC who also doubles as the Board member, Alhaji Abubakar Ahmed; member LOC Alhaji Danjuma Mazu, Secretary LOC, Alhaji Yusuf; have been working assiduously to put things in place to ensure a befitting outing.
He said the league is organized by the association in conjunction with the Kaduna Government who has ensured a befitting accommodation is provided for the officials and athletes; adding that both good medical coverage and security are provided for the event.
“So there are clubs and some by implication states directly like the teams from Kwara are the Adorable Queens and Adorable Stars; there is the Kogi Confluence Queens and Confluence Stars, the Police Machine, the Benue Buffalos and Benue Queens, Yankari Bulls, Yobe Desert Warriors, Katsina Desert Warriors among others.”
According to him, the league is a platform to scout for talents that would represent the country at any international competition.
“The event is to engage numerous teams to gaining promotion to the premier division, because already as I speak to you we have in our Premier League 22 teams.
“At the end of this championship four teams will emerge to the premiership; 2 male and 2 female by the decision of the Board.
On the choice of Kaduna state, Maigidansama said the Federation is trying to diversify it events so that it won’t concentrate in the south.
He however added that Kaduna has been a household name when it comes to handball. “Before now, Kaduna has hosts African championship and the Federation has also camped teams both the junior and Cadet Teams from where they left for Niamey of which they conquered.
“So Federation has been in the state on and off, and there are elite stars who have graduated to become major stakeholders as far as handball is concern. And the Governor El-Rufai has been a friend and has provided everything anytime the Federation beckons”
Also speaking, Chairman LOC, Alhaji Abubakar Ahmed, said Kaduna state has been holding series of competitions from national to international and most of the states coming are elites in the six geo-political zones who wants to come back again, and again because of the hospitality they enjoyed in time past. The Director of Sports, Kaduna Ministry of Sports, Ibrahim Yakubu, said the state is going to ensure a hitch-free and successful one.
